[All went well up to Marin's grave. Beyond the grave there is a steep downhill section. Without changing pace I galloped down and over the gully. Halfway down] I looked back. My fellow travellers had vanished! They had dismounted and were leading their horses by the rein... What next!
[Apparently they all came from Poltava where the countryside is flat, so that our hills seemed like mountains!]
