"God!" I whispered folding my hands for a prayer just like in my childhood days.
"God! Show me what to do? And whatever happens - Thy will be
done..."
And as if I heard Kravchenko's words, "Somebody prays,
devoutly prays for you, Frosya!" But who? Who?! And I felt
as if a gentle hand gave my hair a smooth. Mother! Alive or dead, her spirit is
with me and, in crucial moments of my life, her prayer allays strokes of
misfortune and gives strength to cope with them. A crescent moon moved through
the clouds over Suiga with such a speed that I got dizzy from weakness and
lowered my eyes. My eyes paused upon the black ice hole... I sprang to my feet,
picked the backpack and turned my back on Suiga. Taiga was ahead. Probably - death. And death in my rear too. Death in the slavery. Death on the loose. I had made my choice...
