The only thing I could do for them were normal living conditions - cleanness, fresh air and sun. First of all, the cleanness in cages. For that purpose they set a canteen where they were fed in groups. Then the pans were washed and turned upside down. The rats had nothing to banquet on!
It was more difficult to achieve of setting of an exercise yard for them.
"Why? They suffer of rheumatism, of leg ache. And you want to let them out in freezing temperatures?"
"... and in the sun. The ache will go if they move!"
Captain Volkenshtein believed me. The yard was built and I myself take care of not letting the pigs, especially ill piglets, lie down and make them walk. And the things took turn for the better.
