Why did they put me in the completely dark solitary cell (the light flickered for two or three seconds and went out again) furnished only with a metal bed (without a mattress or anything else) and a gutbucket? I don't know. I have steady nerves. Neither darkness nor solitude depressed me. Quite the contrary, I would prefer absolute solitude to the company of rats. There were quite a lot of them but they weren't aggressive. Sleeping on metal bands is uncomfortable, but it was still warm and sometimes even hot.
