[I remembered that Vassily Lisnick had sons, and he gave me his eldest son Vanyuska, a lad of about 16. We contracted for 200 roubles to saw, split and put into the barn of the so-called Aleynikov School 1000 poods in the gross. We effortlessly finished within a week, and the lad felt embarrassed when taking his half of the pay.
But once, when we were sawing firewood at Bozharovka a policeman came and called Vanyushka over the fence. He calmly drove the axe into a block, nodded to me and went.]
"That's all," I thought. "I will have no workmate tomorrow".
