[Soldiers including the political commissar, a former seaman who was fond of talking politics, quartered at Petya Malinda, who made sausages and sold meat.
Once, on closer view at the life of our workers who were by no means wealthy, the commissar exclaimed in vexation:]
"We have struggled, starved, gone through many hardships for 23 years, to bring freedom to workfolk all over the world. But you here gorge sausages and white bread!"
"Did we ask you to starve for 23 years to free us from sausages and white bread?" answered the girl [, Malinda's servant. (It was at a kickback, girls came to her to spin wool, and lads brought a violin and a flute. They all enjoyed, and on the table there were usual treats - stuffed leaves, pies, sausages and wine.)]
