<Only women worked as loaders at the base. It is quite clear why women did the hardest work at collective farms: there were very few men there, especially during the war time. And those who were there had special privilege. As to the camps, especially those in polar regions like Norilsk the situation was contrary: there were ten times more men than women. It was easy to find men for such hard work! But they stole shamefully impudently and even more than that – they damaged things. It is difficult and dangerous to try frightening a man amok of starvation. So all these women, especially shy and humble Ukrainian girls, valued this work so much because it could help them shorten the punishment two or three times and sometimes they could even get something to eat!>
